Kareena Kapoor completes 15 years: 15 roles that prove she will continue to rule Bollywood, rest don't matter

 




It was exactly 15 years ago on this very day that Kareena Kapoor kick started her Bollywood career on a perfect when the JP Dutta-directed ‘Refugee’ arrived in theaters and got off to a good start at the box office, earning tremendous critical acclaim.
Not one to rest on her laurels, the actress soon consolidated her standing in the industry thanks to her lively screen presence, bubbly dialogue delivery and above all confident body language. As Kareena completes 15 successful years in Bollywood, we revisit some of her finest big screen outings.
Ashoka: Directed by Santosh Sivan, ‘Ashoka’ revolved around the life of a legendary Mauryan king of the same name. Essaying the role of a Kalinga-based princess, Kareena created a stir amongst movie buffs courtesy her lively performance and crackling chemistry with Shah Rukh Khan.
Jab We Met: Regarded as the most popular film of Kareena’s career, ‘Jab We Met’ featured Kareena in the role of a talkative Punjabi woman who falls in love with rich industrialist she meets on a train. A runaway hit at the box office, the movie’s success helped the actress win a Filmfare award.
3 Idiots: Loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel ‘Five Point Someone’, this Rajkumar Hirani-directed comedy saw Kareena share screen space with none other than ‘Mr Perfectionst’ Aamir Khan. Kareena made full use of the opportunity, delivering a simple yet powerful performance. Moreover, her rapport with Aamir in the ‘Zoobie Doobie’ number was appreciated by all and sundry.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham: Touted as a gripping Family drama, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ saw Kareena Kapoor working alongside some of Hindi cinema’s biggest names such as Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Amitabh Bachchan. Paired opposite the ravishing Hrithik Roshan, , ‘Bebo’ played her part with absolute ease and earned a Filmfare nomination.
Chameli: Best remembered for its bold yet sensitive storyline, ‘Chameli’ revolved around the relationship between a banker and a sex-worker. Playing the titular role, Kareena showcased her acting prowess to the fullest and delivered a very refined performance. Interestingly, ‘Chameli’ was the brainchild of Anant Balani. Sadly, he died before completing it. The remaining portions were wrapped up by Sudhir Mishra.
Aitraaz: Boasting of a gripping storyline which showcased how men can be sexually exploited by women, ‘Aitraaz’ is best remembered for the pulsating courtroom sequence in which ‘Bebo’ confronts Priyanka Chopra, restoring her husband dignity.
Omkara: Based on Shakespeare’s popular drama ‘Othello’, this Vishal Bharadwaj-directed film boasted of some superlative performances and rustic dialogues. Kareena’s relatable portrayal of the innocent dolly helped her bag a Filmfare award.
Don: Although Kareena had a very small role in this attempted remake of the yesteryear classic of the same name, she managed to leave an impact courtesy her stylish dance moves in the ‘Yeh Mera Dil’ number. Interestingly, Helen had grooved to the same track in the original.
Kambakkt Ishq: Directed by Sabbir Khan, ' Kambakkt Ishq’ created buzz amongst movie buffs owing to its strong language and bold screenplay. Sharing screen space with Akhshay Kumar, Kareena delivered a sincere performance that added new life to her character. Interestingly, the film also featured Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone in a small but powerful role.

Kurbaan: Presenting a unique perspective on terrorism, ‘Kurbaan’ found itself in the midst of an ugly controversy when a petition was filed against its makers alleging that two songs from the movie contained offensive lyrics. The controversy notwithstanding ‘Kurbaan’ received rave reviews upon release. ’Bebo’ essayed her role with absolute maturity especially during the final few scenes and bagged a Filmfare nomination.
Milenge Milenge: Loosely based on the 2001 English film ‘Serendipity’, ‘Milenge Milenge’ went on the floors in 2004. However, it ran into some financial problems during production, arriving in theatres six years later in 2010. It released after Kareena and Shahid Kapoor’s breakup so there was some excitement among movie buffs to catch the ex-lovebirds together one last time. Interestingly, the film also boasted of some catchy music from Himesh Reshammiya. Unfortunately, ‘Milenge Milenge’ could not find much success at the ticket window.
Chup Chup Ke: Regarded as one of Kareena's most challenging role till date, 'Chup Chup Ke' featured the actress in the role of a mute girl. She delivered a stunning performance, letting her eyes and expressions do the talking.
Agent Vinod: Reuniting the ‘Kurbaan’ duo of Saif and Kareena, ‘Agent Vinod’ was shot in a various countries such as India, Pakistan, Russia and Latvia. Touted as an action-thriller, it boasted of an intense performance from ‘Bebo’. Despite creating a lot of pre-release buzz it tanked at the box office.
Golmaal 3: Directed by Rohit Shetty, ‘Golmaal 3’ served as strong proof of Kareena’s flawless comic timing. Also featuring Mithun Chakraborty, Ajay Devgn and Arshad Warsi in the lead, the movie was a big hit at the box office.
Talaash: Best remembered for its spooky climax, ‘Talaash’ featured Kareena in what can only be described as an unconventional role. Moreover, the actress shared a sizzling chemistry with Aamir khan, elevating the film to new heights.
